As an outsider, I was invited to a Japanese lifestyle cooking class that I'm surprised to find out that the person teaching it is not Japanese. As the session goes on, I can't help but think that she's not giving the full picture of where the dishes come from and how they're made. It's probably because she wants me to buy her cookbook after the class, which is fine with me. However, one thing bugs me - why doesn't she know what ichiban is? A reporter just happened by at this moment and takes pictures of her and asks for a comment about ichiban. She replies with "ichiban means first" after some thought and continues serving the food.

I am the daughter of Japanese immigrants who married a man from another culture. My mother and father can’t decide what to cook for a family event, so I ask them to cook each of their dishes. The event starts off with appetizers from both cultures. However, the appetizers are not enough for everyone, so I ask my parents to cook more dishes to feed more people. My father and mother continue cooking, but every time they set out a new dish, the same amount of people show up as before. The guests continue to eat and enjoy each other’s food for a long time, until there isn’t any food left on the table and all that is left are these delicious memories.
